Fire Risk Assessment - Static Caravan
Step 1 - Identify Fire Hazards and Fire Risks.
1.1 Sources of ignition
a) Electrical - wiring and appliances
i.The electrical wiring has been checked by a qualified contractor within the last 5 years.
ii. Trailing cables, overloaded sockets/adapters/extension leads, damage to cables, scorched cracked or loose sockets/switches have been eliminated.
iii.The fuseboard/circuit breakers are in good condition and correctly labelled.
iv. All the appliances in good condition with undamaged cables.
v. The electrical appliances have been checked by a competent person within the last year.
vi. All appliances labelled to show date of last test
b) Cooking - especially deep-fat frying
There are instructions for the safe use of cooking equipment.
c) Smoking
i. There is a strict 'no smoking' policy throughout the Caravan. Smoking is only allowed outside of the building.
ii. There is a metal, sand filled bin, outside, for cigarette butts that is emptied when needed.
d) Candles
Candleholders/candlesticks or tea lights are not permitted to be used in the caravan.
e) Heaters and boilers
i. The heating in the caravan is a wall mounted, gas fire.
ii. The heater is in good condition, as it was replaced in 2007.
iii. There are no freestanding heaters.
iv. The boiler is regularly serviced by a qualified person (e.g. Corgi registered engineer), the last test was July 2008.
f) Open fires
There are no open fires in the caravan.
g) Others
There is the gas oven and hob, in the kitchen, which are both tested annually by the corgi engineer. Last test July 2008.
1.2. Fuel present
There are usually 2 gas cyllinders outside the caravan. Once being used and the spare, to change onto.
h) Elements of structure
i. The floors are made of timber.
ii. The walls of timber internally with a pressed steel shell.
iii.There are no wall or ceiling lining material, other than wallpapers that might burn.
i) Furniture and furnishings
i. Furnishings do comply with the Furniture and Furnishing (Fire Safety) Regulations - the mattresses do not have to display the test label, as stated by the regulations.
ii. There is nothing that could be deemed to be unusual and/or give rise to an increased fire risk.
j) Domestic waste
i. Domestic waste is removed from the property daily.
ii. Domestic waste is kept away from sources of ignition.
k) Other items - e.g. petrol for lawnmowers, cleaning materials etc
There are none.
1.3. Activities that might cause a fire, including work processes/procedures etc.
i. Cooking - Bad practice with cooker, microwave or toaster. Common sense should prevail on correct usage. Regular checks are carried out to ensure they fully working properly.
ii. Illegal use of BBQ inside the caravan. - BBQ area in camping field is provided, or outside on the patio area.
iii. Illegal use of candles - prohibited.
iv. Illegal smoking - prohibited inside, tin bucket for dog-ends provided outside.
Step 2 - Identify Persons at Risk.
2.1 Number of guests
i. The property considered suitable for 6 people.
ii. It is anticipated that children will stay in the property and, they could be anywhere in the building.
iii. We do not expect to be accommodating persons who require assistance to escape the property.
2.2. Number of staff/employees
We have no employees.
Step 3 - Evaluate the Risks.
3.1. Means of escape
a) Detail the type of property:
The property is a regular static caravan. It is a ground floor construction.
b) Detail the number of exit doors and where they are:
There are 2 exit doors in the building.
i. They are both outward opening.
ii. They are always easy to open.
iii. They always kept clear and available for use, when left for customers. While staying in the building the guest may have blocked the route.
3.2. The fire alarm and fire detection
c) Describe what fire alarm and fire detectors have been provided:
i. People hard of hearing, or otherwise have 2 doors that can be evacuated from.
ii. The smoke alarms are mains activated with a battery back up.
3.3. Fire fighting equipment
d) Detail what fire extinguishers/blankets are provided and where they are.
There is a powder fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
3.4. Escape lighting
e) Detail areas covered by emergency lighting (if any):
There is no emergency lighting.
3.5. Evacuation procedure
f) Describe the evacuation procedures
On discovering a fire (no matter how small)
The alarm will automatically sound.
EVACUATE the building, via the nearest exit.
DIAL 999 immediately and give details of the fire.
CLOSE all doors and windows in the vicinity of the fire.
PROCEED immediately to the Assembly Point:-
The Assembly point is in the camping field. Turn left from the caravan carpark, to the end of the barns, then turn right, passed the toilets, to the camping field.
